The importance of person-centred care

We pride ourselves on our person-centred, holistic approach. We spoke to various members of the team about meaningful moments they've had with residents.
I love having a sing-song with residents and banter during personal care. It helps to ease residents who are feeling a bit anxious.
Siobhan, Healthcare Assistant

Seeing the mementos and photos in their rooms can lead to a meaningful conversation with someone about what is important to them - the opportunity to personalise your room is essential.
Ellie, Wellbeing Assistant

I love helping residents to be as independent as possible, and to have choice. Whether it's choosing their clothes or what they want to do, getting up and out. It's really meaningful.
Sarah, Student Nurse

I've just come down from sitting with a gentleman from St Just. We spoke about the history of the town and it's nice to learn from him. The older generation have a lot to teach us. It's lovely to see him smile and his eyes light up reminiscing.

Emma, Healthcare Assistant
We're not a nursing home, we're just one big family. From all levels - activities, housekeepers, kitchen, the residents - we're all equal and everyone is prepared to do any job to the best of their ability.
Karen, AP

I like to go in and make them feel special and have a good chat. People can really open up on a one-to-one basis.
Ann, Head of Care

I love supporting someone to do something they thought they'd never do again, like taking a resident back to the beach they used to surf on. Or reminding them they're not too old for first times. I took a resident to Tate St Ives. When we were driving into St Ives, she started to tear up and said she thought she'd never see St Ives again. And when we walked around the Tate she noted how much her late husband, an artist, would have loved it. We have meaningful moments every day. When a resident enters the final stages of their life, it can be something as simple as bringing in shells from their favourite beach.
Emma, Activities & Engagement Lead
eWe also had some fantastic feedback in a recent survey which was circulated to staff, residents, their loved ones, and the local community. Here are some of the highlights:
  • Inclusive, with great activities
  • Gave my aunt a life she didn't have before
  • Homely atmosphere, good smells from the kitchen
  • Friendly, warm and caring with a sense of humour too
  • If I needed a nursing home, this is where I would want to be
  • Perfect for tailored care services. Staff are supportive in all your care needs, beliefs and values
  • My mother had care and respect from all members of staff
  • I am impressed with the lengths staff go to to get residents out of the building during activities
  • My grandma is thriving
  • Watching the kindness and involvement of staff to get out of their way to make a resident happy
  • When I was due for a catheter change in WCH, and I got back to Benoni around 9pm, I was met by three members of staff waiting for me and welcoming me back "home"
  • Small, friendly home where everybody is like family

Why work at Benoni?

We spoke to various members of the team about how the organisation has supported their own personal and professional development. Here's what they had to say.
Picture
I'm currently studying Level 3 Health & Social Care. It's fantastic to build on my knowledge and tailor my practice to individual needs. It means we can offer so much more to residents.
Siobhan, Healthcare Assistant

I've passed my AP qualification and now I'm looking towards nursing. I feel I can give the residents a lot more now my knowledge and confidence has expanded.
Karen, AP

I came on as a carer and now I'm a student nurse. I wouldn't get that opportunity anywhere else. I've learned loads and it opens up so many doors. I get the chance to put clinical skills into practice, including end of life care. Everyone is encouraged to do stuff like that which is great.
Sarah, Student Nurse

I'm progressing in my career here. I'm currently doing my Level 3 Lead in Adult Social Care and after completing that I plan to move up to Level 4. It gives me more knowledge so I can provide the best care. I'm given time for meetings, training, and to complete my workbooks. I have worked in care for 18 years but you never know it all and it's always changing.
Emma, Healthcare Assistant

I've been working at Benoni for 31 years, moving my way up from Housekeeping to Head of Care. I've learned a lot from my colleagues over the years - you're always learning. The young ones coming in have great new ideas. It's a pleasure to come to work. I've never known a place like it.
Ann, Head of Care

I worked in community care before I came to Benoni and it's great to work as part of a team and know that there are people here who have my back. The 12-week induction period taught me a lot about how being in a nursing home can be equally as special to people as being in their home.
Ellie, Wellbeing Assistant

We also had some fantastic feedback in our recent survey, which was circulated to staff, residents, their loved ones, and the local community.  Here are some highlights:
  • When asked how they would describe Benoni to a friend, comments included "Great place to work and lovely environment for the residents" and "It’s a lovely place to work with a fantastic team delivering all aspects of nursing care to residents unable to support or look after themselves at home. The staff in each department genuinely care about providing the best they can for each individual person. It’s like one big family."
  • When asked what positive experiences they have had, comments included "Excellent professional development", "Working with kind, funny, caring people", "When I drive home and am very pleased with how I have helped and improved an individual's day, that is my motivation", and "Lots of support from all team departments, always willing to support and welcome new starters. The senior team have been very supportive in helping me rediscover my confidence and develop my clinical skills".
  • When asked what makes Benoni unique, many people said "the staff". Residents noted "the care and the fun that we have" and "The staff who are caring, friendly, helpful, will get out of their way to do their best".

We went along to the Proud to Care Awards at the Eden Project last Friday night to celebrate Nicky, who is not just our Hidden Treasure, but officially Proud to Care's Hidden Treasure too.
Nicky received this award largely due to her extensive dysphagia menu, something which makes a difference to many residents' lives every day.
