It's National Apprenticeship Week and we're shining the spotlight on some of our wonderful apprentices. Lindsey, Staff Nurse I was Benoni's first apprentice. It was a learning experience for everyone; we've all been on the same journey. I qualified in December 2023 and got my pin the following February, so it's been a year now. It has always been my dream to be a nurse and I am so grateful for the support and guidance. As soon as you mention something to John (Matron/Manager) about an interest in development, he'll have you signed up within 24 hours! With John's gentle persuasion, and this apprenticeship route, I've achieved my dream. It's a great route as you can work alongside studying and I'd definitely recommend it as a more mature student. Sarah M, Student Nurse I’m just going into the second part of my nursing apprenticeship and I really recommend this programme. I feel very well supported by the team at Benoni and I feel this is because I work closely with highly trained and experienced nurses in different areas of nursing. All staff want to teach and no questions feel stupid or invalid. I also feel comfortable asking questions as we are a close friendly bunch and have worked together for a while. Another advantage is being able to stay clinical, even during the theory part of the programme, so you are always learning. I feel my confidence has grown massively since starting at Benoni due to encouragement and support, extra training outside of the programme, and caring for our residents. SJ, Associate Practitioner I started Benoni when I was half way through my apprenticeship; it was a risky move but the right choice for me. The support I have received within Benoni has been unmatched. The nursing team and matron take time to teach, support, and grow their employees and create a very welcoming and warm environment. They are always open to progressing their team and I'm aware of future steps I can take when I choose to - I know that I am supported within my current role and in any future endeavours. It's a place I would recommend to anyone who is either starting out or looking to progress. Rosie, Student Nurse Being an apprentice has allowed me to gain knowledge and skills continuously on the job. I have been able to study in university alongside working, which makes the degree very full on but has meant I have been able to implement skills into practice. With the encouragement and support from all at Benoni, my confidence has grown so much in the past two years. I am very pleased with my growth. John, Matron and Managing Director
It’s nice to invest in people in a way that allows them to put into practice, and embed the skills that they’re learning, as they grow. Apprenticeship models suit healthcare and it’s definitely been a positive mechanism in our organisation as it’s allowed us to grow - they already uphold our values and ethics, and it’s passing it over to the next generation. I have always had a passion for teaching and favour a blended approach with apprenticeships - it ticks my box because I've always been a practical kinaesthetic teacher, not just dealing with theory. This route is more accessible for people who are concerned about an academic process. It has been really positive for learners with requirements for additional learning support too. Five people have already completed apprenticeships successfully with us. It's a model we’re familiar with, with a really supportive environment.
