Welcome to our blog

The importance of person-centred care

9/23/2025

We pride ourselves on our person-centred, holistic approach. We spoke to various members of the team about meaningful moments they've had with residents.
I love having a sing-song with residents and banter during personal care. It helps to ease residents who are feeling a bit anxious.
Siobhan, Healthcare Assistant

Seeing the mementos and photos in their rooms can lead to a meaningful conversation with someone about what is important to them - the opportunity to personalise your room is essential.
Ellie, Wellbeing Assistant

I love helping residents to be as independent as possible, and to have choice. Whether it's choosing their clothes or what they want to do, getting up and out. It's really meaningful.
Sarah, Student Nurse

I've just come down from sitting with a gentleman from St Just. We spoke about the history of the town and it's nice to learn from him. The older generation have a lot to teach us. It's lovely to see him smile and his eyes light up reminiscing.

Emma, Healthcare Assistant
We're not a nursing home, we're just one big family. From all levels - activities, housekeepers, kitchen, the residents - we're all equal and everyone is prepared to do any job to the best of their ability.
Karen, AP

I like to go in and make them feel special and have a good chat. People can really open up on a one-to-one basis.
Ann, Head of Care

I love supporting someone to do something they thought they'd never do again, like taking a resident back to the beach they used to surf on. Or reminding them they're not too old for first times. I took a resident to Tate St Ives. When we were driving into St Ives, she started to tear up and said she thought she'd never see St Ives again. And when we walked around the Tate she noted how much her late husband, an artist, would have loved it. We have meaningful moments every day. When a resident enters the final stages of their life, it can be something as simple as bringing in shells from their favourite beach.
Emma, Activities & Engagement Lead
eWe also had some fantastic feedback in a recent survey which was circulated to staff, residents, their loved ones, and the local community. Here are some of the highlights:
  • Inclusive, with great activities
  • Gave my aunt a life she didn't have before
  • Homely atmosphere, good smells from the kitchen
  • Friendly, warm and caring with a sense of humour too
  • If I needed a nursing home, this is where I would want to be
  • Perfect for tailored care services. Staff are supportive in all your care needs, beliefs and values
  • My mother had care and respect from all members of staff
  • I am impressed with the lengths staff go to to get residents out of the building during activities
  • My grandma is thriving
  • Watching the kindness and involvement of staff to get out of their way to make a resident happy
  • When I was due for a catheter change in WCH, and I got back to Benoni around 9pm, I was met by three members of staff waiting for me and welcoming me back "home"
  • Small, friendly home where everybody is like family

If you're interested in a room for yourself or a loved one, and would like to find out more, call 01736 788433 or email [email protected] for a chat or to book a tour.

Why work at Benoni?

We spoke to various members of the team about how the organisation has supported their own personal and professional development. Here's what they had to say.
Picture
I'm currently studying Level 3 Health & Social Care. It's fantastic to build on my knowledge and tailor my practice to individual needs. It means we can offer so much more to residents.
Siobhan, Healthcare Assistant

I've passed my AP qualification and now I'm looking towards nursing. I feel I can give the residents a lot more now my knowledge and confidence has expanded.
Karen, AP

I came on as a carer and now I'm a student nurse. I wouldn't get that opportunity anywhere else. I've learned loads and it opens up so many doors. I get the chance to put clinical skills into practice, including end of life care. Everyone is encouraged to do stuff like that which is great.
Sarah, Student Nurse

I'm progressing in my career here. I'm currently doing my Level 3 Lead in Adult Social Care and after completing that I plan to move up to Level 4. It gives me more knowledge so I can provide the best care. I'm given time for meetings, training, and to complete my workbooks. I have worked in care for 18 years but you never know it all and it's always changing.
Emma, Healthcare Assistant

I've been working at Benoni for 31 years, moving my way up from Housekeeping to Head of Care. I've learned a lot from my colleagues over the years - you're always learning. The young ones coming in have great new ideas. It's a pleasure to come to work. I've never known a place like it.
Ann, Head of Care
Picture
I worked in community care before I came to Benoni and it's great to work as part of a team and know that there are people here who have my back. The 12-week induction period taught me a lot about how being in a nursing home can be equally as special to people as being in their home.
Ellie, Wellbeing Assistant

We also had some fantastic feedback in our recent survey, which was circulated to staff, residents, their loved ones, and the local community.  Here are some highlights:
  • When asked how they would describe Benoni to a friend, comments included "Great place to work and lovely environment for the residents" and "It’s a lovely place to work with a fantastic team delivering all aspects of nursing care to residents unable to support or look after themselves at home. The staff in each department genuinely care about providing the best they can for each individual person. It’s like one big family."
  • When asked what positive experiences they have had, comments included "Excellent professional development", "Working with kind, funny, caring people", "When I drive home and am very pleased with how I have helped and improved an individual's day, that is my motivation", and "Lots of support from all team departments, always willing to support and welcome new starters. The senior team have been very supportive in helping me rediscover my confidence and develop my clinical skills".
  • When asked what makes Benoni unique, many people said "the staff". Residents noted "the care and the fun that we have" and "The staff who are caring, friendly, helpful, will get out of their way to do their best".

Nicky is officially a Hidden Treasure!

9/22/2025

We went along to the Proud to Care Awards at the Eden Project last Friday night to celebrate Nicky, who is not just our Hidden Treasure, but officially Proud to Care's Hidden Treasure too.
Nicky received this award largely due to her extensive dysphagia menu, something which makes a difference to many residents' lives every day.

Nicky shortlisted for Proud to Care Award

8/4/2025

We're super proud of our Nicky for being shortlisted for Hidden Treasure at the Proud to Care Awards.  Take a look at her two nominations below and you'll soon see why.

First nomination

Nicky makes the best food... case closed. Nicky leads our catering team in the provision of an extensive menu promoting choice, reminiscence and nutrition.

Nicky runs our kitchen effectively demonstrating strong leadership and effective management skills, she prepares seasonal menus for our residents by seeking their requests and considering the nutritional requirements that they have. Nicky makes it her mission to find out what each of our residents' favourite foods are and seeks to incorporate this into their dining experience.

Nicky is happiest when she is out and about, mixing with our residents and contributing towards making them giggle, as a "feeder" she is successful in pleasing even the most picky eater!

Nicky has recently created an entirely separate dysphagia menu for our residents with a compromised swallow, she offers choice and uses moulds to present the dishes in a recognisable and professional manner.
Nicky is a strong voice in our seasonal activities, taking the helm at our annual summer BBQ and often playing the star role in our themed food days.

Nicky's passion and enthusiasm for her role and our residents shines through all that she is. Without her, many of our parties would have been quieter affairs....any excuse for a crazy costume.
Picture

Nicky is well respected by our residents and their families and is a valued member of our team who ensures that nobody goes hungry at Benoni.

Second nomination
Nicky has been part of the Benoni family for the past five years. She has a lovely rapport with the residents, encouraging those who struggle to eat and working with them to offer something nutritious and delicious. Nicky has worked hard to develop a separate menu for our residents with dysphagia, using moulds to improve the way that meals are presented to these individuals, and also ensuring residents with specific dietary requirements can still have birthday cake. One particular resident with dysphagia nominated Nicky for Employee of the Month for making the best mince pies she's ever had. So much of what Nicky does goes unnoticed but it really is about the little things.

We'll be watching the live stream on 19 September with eager eyes ready to see if Nicky brings the award home. We certainly think she deserves it. Have a great time at the shindig, Nicky!

Why be a nurse at Benoni?

We asked our nursing team why they love nursing at Benoni. Here are some of their responses.
"As a registered nurse working at this small, close-knit nursing home, I can say that we have a warm small-town family atmosphere that truly sets us apart - our residents aren’t just cared for, they’re known, valued, and respected as individuals. This is due to the home's genuine commitment to person-centred care and the way every staff member, from carers to nurses to management, are supported and encouraged to grow. There are real opportunities for professional development at every level, and the owners are always open to feedback and new ideas."
Simon, Deputy Manager
Picture
"Benoni offers a great opportunity for nurses to develop and grow within their career. Specifically, the management team are open to working with individuals and developing their area of interest. I have felt very supported in my short time at Benoni and can see that the care we deliver to residents is person-centred and holistic. The clinical expertise within the senior nursing team has allowed me to develop my own nursing clinical skills and gain confidence in my own practice. Overall, Benoni is a fantastic place to work,  all team departments are committed to working together to achieve the best outcome for our residents. I would highly recommend joining the team at Benoni!"

National Apprenticeship Week

2/5/2025

It's National Apprenticeship Week and we're shining the spotlight on some of our wonderful apprentices.
Picture
Lindsey, Staff Nurse
I was Benoni's first apprentice. It was a learning experience for everyone; we've all been on the same journey. I qualified in December 2023 and got my pin the following February, so it's been a year now. It has always been my dream to be a nurse and I am so grateful for the support and guidance. As soon as you mention something to John (Matron/Manager) about an interest in development, he'll have you signed up within 24 hours! With John's gentle persuasion, and this apprenticeship route, I've achieved my dream. It's a great route as you can work alongside studying and I'd definitely recommend it as a more mature student.
Picture
Sarah M, Student Nurse
I’m just going into the second part of my nursing apprenticeship and I really recommend this programme. I feel very well supported by the team at Benoni and I feel this is because I work closely with highly trained and experienced nurses in different areas of nursing. All staff want to teach and no questions feel stupid or invalid. I also feel comfortable asking questions as we are a close friendly bunch and have worked together for a while. Another advantage is being able to stay clinical, even during the theory part of the programme, so you are always learning. I feel my confidence has grown massively since starting at Benoni due to encouragement and support, extra training outside of the programme, and caring for our residents.
SJ, Associate Practitioner
I started Benoni when I was half way through my apprenticeship; it was a risky move but the right choice for me. The support I have received within Benoni has been unmatched. The nursing team and matron take time to teach, support, and grow their employees and create a very welcoming and warm environment. They are always open to progressing their team and I'm aware of future steps I can take when I choose to - I know that I am supported within my current role and in any future endeavours. It's a place I would recommend to anyone who is either starting out or looking to progress.
Rosie, Student Nurse
Being an apprentice has allowed me to gain knowledge and skills continuously on the job. I have been able to study in university alongside working, which makes the degree very full on but has meant I have been able to implement skills into practice. With the encouragement and support from all at Benoni, my confidence has grown so much in the past two years. I am very pleased with my growth.
Picture
John, Matron and Managing Director
It’s nice to invest in people in a way that allows them to put into practice, and embed the skills that they’re learning, as they grow. Apprenticeship models suit healthcare and it’s definitely been a positive mechanism in our organisation as it’s allowed us to grow - they already uphold our values and ethics, and it’s passing it over to the next generation. I have always had a passion for teaching and favour a blended approach with apprenticeships - it ticks my box because I've always been a practical kinaesthetic teacher, not just dealing with theory. This route is more accessible for people who are concerned about an academic process. It has been really positive for learners with requirements for additional learning support too. Five people have already completed apprenticeships successfully with us. It's a model we’re familiar with, with a really supportive environment.

If you're interested in exploring different career routes with us, check out our recruitment page or give us a call.

Why become a Healthcare Assistant?

9/23/2024

We recently hired two Healthcare Assistants with no previous care experience. We pride ourselves on the development opportunities we offer our staff and it's been a pleasure to see them grow in their roles over the last few months. Tilly has joined the team straight from education and Tammy has made the move from hospitality.

We are currently hiring Healthcare Assistants and we spoke to Tammy about why it's been a great move for her.
Picture
"I never thought I'd be in this kind of role but the nurturing side has come out more as I've grown older, especially now I'm a parent.

"With no previous knowledge of care work, there has been a lot to learn, especially initially, but I've had all the support I needed. Everyone has completely taken me under their wing.

"If you're thinking about making the move to care, there are likely loads of transferrable skills in your current or previous roles. To be a good healthcare assistant, you need to be a good communicator, have respect, and be willing to learn.

"There are lots of opportunities for me to grow here. I know I don't want to be a nurse but I do want to progress.

"We have 24 residents and they're all so different. My favourite part of the job is hearing people's stories."

Proud to Care Awards - shortlisted nominees

9/4/2024

We are so proud to have been nominated, and shortlisted, for multiple awards at the first Proud to Care Awards.
Picture
Picture
Nominated and shortlisted: "Jen is a driven, compassionate nurse who is a strong advocate for person-centred care and hospital avoidance. Jen has supported the management team to review approaches to infection prevention to promote excellence in the workplace and is a role model for our apprentice student nurses. Jen is currently undertaking further development to support growth across the organisation.

Jen has brought her previous acute illness management skills from her previous role (I.T.U at RCHT) and has been instrumental in sharing these with the team to support confidence in recognising the deteriorating patient. Jen is a patient and enthusiastic mentor, who is an efficient and positive role model for the team."
Picture
Picture
Nominated: "John has been the Manager and Clinical Matron of Benoni Nursing Home for several years and recently bought the home with one of his deputies, Anne Pickin. He truly is an outstanding leader, dedicated to holistic, person-centred care. No job is too big or too small - he gets stuck in on the floor, and has a fantastic rapport with residents. He champions his team and prioritises their development, with a PA becoming a student nurse, housekeeper becoming head of care, healthcare assistant becoming a nurse, and general assistant becoming a cook."
Picture
Nominated and shortlisted: "John has been innovative in his care provision ideas and created a sanctuary for healing and calm. John introduced holistic therapies into the team several years ago employing a Holistic Therapist which then, with the addition of activities coordinators and occupational therapists became the 'Wellbeing Team'. All of the staff have had the opportunity to become trained to perform Reiki.

Johns innovative ideas have enabled a resident to be reenabled and discharged to a new flat, she has flourished in her independence. We are also helping post stroke victims to move limbs which they have not moved for a very long time. Staff are empowered to use their holistic skills as and when they see fit on their shifts. The home is a lovely place, staff and residents all feel like family."

We're looking forward to celebrating this recognition at the awards ceremony on 20 September.
